Meaning business from the word go with a sugary opening yell of "shoot, bang, fire!", 'The Magic Position' goes forth with an exquisitively innovative melee of sounds that passionately climax to a percussional 'ping' close. The full-bodied four minutes blend handclaps, foot stomps, deep breaths, strings, glockenspiel, synth, bodhran, morris bells and drums - to name just a few of the integrated 'instruments'. The arrangement works amazingly well, with the result being an optimistic, chirpy tune that evades being too kitsch by the pseudo-melancholic vocals of Wolf.
Sounding like the love child of Neil Hannon and Roy Orbison, Wolf's voice adds depth with a subtle dark undercurrent that contrasts the cheery hopeful love story that the lyrics and music suggest. Even the pre-chorus verse of "cause out of all the people I've known, the places I've been, the songs that I've sung, the wonders I've seen" sounds similar to a section of Orbison's 'I Drove All Night'.
Sublimely sombre, whilst coated in sugary pop, this is a grower that, unlike Mika, doesn’t get on your nerves after the tenth listen. 'The Magic Position' is the title track from Wolf's third album, and befitting to its name, this is glorious magical pop.
