With their new album having reached Number Three in the charts, Funeral For A Friend hope tonight to give something back to those who have shown great dedication to a band. In sweltering heat, induced by a large turnout of teeny/twenty- somethings, support acts Haunt and The Receiving End Of Sirens inflict their own individual incarnation of emo rock upon the seething crowd. Warmly received on both counts, both bands supply a series of highly-charged, guitar-fuelled tracks. Whilst Haunt dish out a well-orchestrated spectacle of musicianship, The Receiving End Of Sirens' inclusion of a fifth guitar to proceedings was too much to bear and had a negative effect on the quality of vocals by Brendan Brown and Alex Bars.
Funeral For A Friend enter to rapturous applause, and within no time have the crowd ensnared hook, line and sinker by kicking off with latest single release 'Into Oblivion (Reunion)'. As younger fans are struck by the energetic pace of the new single, an over-enthusiasm soon rears its ugly head, with several unfortunate individuals being bundled to the ground with bloody noses. Despite lead singer Matt Davies having made requests at previous gigs to help the fallen few, proceedings are not repeated tonight, and shenanigans ensue all evening.
Spurred on by the a tumultuous applause dished out by reactions to the band's opener, FFAF proceed to dish out a stack of tracks both old and new, including 'Juneau', 'Monsters', 'Roses For The Dead' and their next single 'Walk Away'.
Expert musicianship on guitars from Kris Coombs-Roberts, Darran Smith and Gareth Davies throughout the evening was a joy to witness. Ryan Richards on drums - bearing a striking resemblance to Chris Moyles - supplies a faultless performance and keeps the band together.
Riled by an audience who were obviously on a non-stop high, it is clear to see that the band members are enjoying themselves hugely. By the end of the evening, after a well-orchestrated setlist is completed, the band themselves praise the crowd who have come to see them, and admit this had been one of their finest performances.
