From cult band to being thrown headfirst into the mainstream, The Dandy Warhols have had a rollercoaster ride over the past couple of years. A mobile phone soundtrack, a hit single and some particularly fat cheques later, the quartet return with 'Smoke It'.
The first from their new album due this September, 'Smoke It' is identifiably Dandy: woozy Moog basslines, clattering drums and guitar-heavy rock 'n' roll riffs are topped off with Courtney Taylor's sleazy, rambling melodies. Taylor sounds like a curious mixture of Mick Jagger and Pelle Almqvist nowadays - his creaking, distorted voice coming through like an evangelical preacher after one too many Jack Daniels.
As Andy Warhol once said, everyone gets their fifteen minutes of fame - but by the sound of 'Smoke It's joyous singalong potential, The Dandy Warhols are guaranteed much longer than that.
