The Kills - Cheap And Cheerful

'Cheap And Cheerful' is more lo-fi electrobeat from London duo The Kills. Clocking in at just under two and a half minutes, there is definitely no fat on the record and it gets straight to the point. Starting with what sounds like an amp warming up along with a phlegmy cough from singer Alison Mosshart, the record then flings out some electric cymbal clashes before bass, drums and vocals arrive and rumble straight through to conclusion. Jamie Hince's guitar is notable only by its absence, appearing solely in the second verse and then only faintly - the track instead pits Mosshart's vocal straight up against the rhythm section. The highlight comes after a minute and a half when an unlikely military tattoo is beaten out on a snare drum as Mosshart sings "it's alright, to be me" straight back at it.

'Cheap And Cheerful' kind of lives up to its name, in that it's simple but effective, with a good groove and a catchy hook "I want you to be crazy, 'cos you're boring baby when you're straight". It also sounds like perfect fodder for a remixer, the simple approach allowing plenty of scope for alteration.
