Domino Records have been one of the most consistent labels around in attracting distinctive guitar touting uber talents, and The Kills are no exception. 'Midnight Boom' consists of a dozen tracks which ooze pure liquid lust from every musical pore, from the mantra-like opener and lead single 'U.R.A. Fever', to 'Getting Down' where the male and female vocals combine in rapturous union in between what can only be described as amorous. 'Last Day Of Magic' is the most down the line accessible track here, a song written by Jamie Hince about heartache and loneliness, combining references to literary heavyweight Crime And Punishment across a primal barrage of guitars and keyboards.

The only real letdown here is 'Sour Cherry' which sees the band revisit the same territory as the aforementioned 'Getting Down' but lacking that same cutting edge. More interesting is the penultimate 'New York Used To Be' - a blistering three minutes of dancefloor centred electro with the distinctive vocals of Alison Mosshart at the fore, proving they are equally as adept at tackling the likes of LCD Soundsystem as The Ramones. 'Goodnight Bad Morning' closes proceedings in sublime fashion, an indie bedtime lullaby in the vein of 'Some Velvet Morning' with a dash of piano in amongst the acoustic guitars.

Whilst many bands rely on a handful of big hitting singles to underpin an otherwise mediocre album, The Kills have succeeded in creating a well crafted collection of songs which play to their strengths of clever lyrics, strong vocal interplay and a willingness to experiment. All they have to do is keep Hotel on the straight and narrow long enough to master their plan for musical world domination.
