Sounding like some long forgotten Led Zeppelin outtake (one that's been long forgotten for a reason), the first single from The Black Keys' forthcoming album 'Attack & Release', finds the boys in 70s rock 'n' roll pastiche mode. The lack of a strong melody means that the never ending refrain of "strange times" really starts to grate, as the song just stutters along in its smug bluesy fashion. Maybe in the context of a full album it will make more sense, but as a trailblazing lead single it leaves a lot to be desired.
Like getting to the end of a fairly average detective novel and finding out the last page has been torn out, it takes a while before it dawns on you that nothing close to remarkable is going to happen. Nothing to see here, please move along.
