Move over Paris, Melbourne is the new dance capital of the world... or at least you could believe so for four minutes, thanks to Midnight Juggernauts. 'Shadows' is a sublime piece of modern disco, albeit modern disco with a fantastic retro bass line. Clearly Francophiles, Midnight Juggernauts tick all the right (cardboard) boxes, Daft Punk and Justice clear influences as walls of shimmering synth lines cascade over a sledgehammer of a kick drum.
The vocal performance is notable too, singer Vinnie switching from a breathless, sinister monotone in the verses to a reverb drenched falsetto in the chorus, with suitably futuristic lyrics: "It's an answer for the future/It's a question that we left in the past". The M83 remix explores these dark overtones further, taking apart its glistening sheen and replacing it with waves of delayed vocals, mournful organ and sombre piano, transforming a dancefloor stomper into a twinkling cinematic ballad.
'Shadows' is the kind of record that sits as comfortably on your stereo at home as it does on the dancefloor, which is all you can ask from a modern intelligent dance record really, isn't it?
