It was always going to be difficult for CSS. Having toured their eponymous debut for so long that everyone was too familiar with it, the follow up had to be a question of whether to stick with the good time, foul-mouthed party anthems, or to push on to pastures new.
It's good to see then that CSS haven't gone with the easy option of 'Let's Make Love II', which surely would have seen them discarded as one trick ponies. Instead 'Left Behind' is a more measured and rueful single than would have been expected although the fizzing keyboards and whirring electro rock is still present, albeit with added melancholic touches. Despite the tales of loss and sense of introspection present on the track, some of the old Lovefoxxx attitude remains as she sings: "I'm gonna jump on to the table and dance my ass off 'til I die".
It may be that CSS are damned whatever they do - after such a strikingly individual and colourful record it could be hard for them to win whatever they did next. It's hard to say if this new-found maturity will serve them well but they deserve continued success for creating a really rather nifty slice of electro pop in 'Left Behind'.
