There are few untouchable solo artists - Paul Weller for so long has been hailed a mod god. Some of this acclaim is unjust, as recent material hasn't delivered to the genius that was The Jam. But with his new album '22 Dreams', the form gods have answered.
'All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You)' will certainly not blow anyone away; it's a reasonable bluesy number and very much a relaxed Weller, making the music that satisfies him. At the age of 50 he can afford to avoid the pressure to be anything other than himself. The flip side, or track two in the CD world, 'Push It Along' has Weller bizarrely sounding like Nick Cave; the track is very driven but lacks any real hooks.
Track three, 'Big Brass Buttons', written with Bobby Gillespie, retreads the Primal Scream singer's fascination with all things Stones. It's great to hear artists collaborate (and on '22 Dreams' there are many), but when it's this unsatisfying its easy to see why it's a b-side.
